Students for the Exploration and Development of Space in the Philippines (SEDS Philippines or SEDSPH), a nonprofit organization in the Philippines whose goals are "to promote space exploration and space technology in the country", has launched Upskill Groups (UG). Filipino mentors and experts lead these groups to develop the technical and professional skills of students curious about astronomy and the space industry. As one of the active astronomy PhD students and researchers from the Philippines, SEDSPH contacted me months before to lead one of their UGs to teach computational astrophysics and astronomical data processing.

I did not hesitate to say yes to them. Last Apr. 22, we conducted the first session of our Upskill Group. After reviewing the applications of all applicants, 24 students were accepted into the UG. I look forward to teaching them the skills I've learned throughout my journey in astronomy, from processing galaxy spectra to producing composite images from space telescopes. Aside from learning new skill sets, I also aim to share my experiences in giving talks and poster presentations to give the students a gist of how scientific conferences work. We meet every other Saturday, 3-5 pm PH time, via Zoom, and the UG is expected to run until Nov. 2023.
